After a week off, I thought it was time to try something different. So this time I tried working in a way that I wouldn’t normally, using a sort of formula for a 3 act story. I suppose the danger of using formulas is that the end result can be very formulaic.
Everyone wrote down a child’s behaviour that could cause concern, nothing too traumatic of course! It could be imaginary or something real. We also came up with a character name, setting and the name of someone or something that could spark a turning point. We mixed and matched all of these elements and came up with an outline for a story. It was an interesting way to work but the end result somehow lacked spark. It almost needed more randomness. I think if we had 4 or 5 more sessions to work on this we could perhaps stretch the ideas in more unexpected directions. But we’re so well into the project now that I think it’s going to have to be something I come back to later. I like this idea of a cautionary tale though… definitely one too keep on the back burner.
